Mozilla
(Mountain View, Calif.)
Firefox is a Web browser created by the non-profit Mozilla Foundation
with the assistance of hundreds of volunteer programmers from
around the world. To celebrate the availability of Firefox 1.0,
a group of open source enthusiasts launched a campaign to purchase
a full-page advertisement in The New York Times. The campaign
raised over $200,000 within ten days – enough for a two-page
spread layout – and resulted in an ad that included the
names of the thousands of small-donation contributors. The Mozilla
Foundation’s stated goal of one million downloads was surpassed
within three days. The advertisement in The New York Times ran
on Dec. 16, 2004.
